Englewood, Florida

Pictures from Englewood and Englewood Beach

Englewood is on the lower Gulf Coast of Florida, about 85 miles south of Tampa. It is one of a number of small towns and cities on the Cape Haze Peninsula. Just across Lemon Bay from the old downtown Englewood, is Englewood Beach on the Gulf of Mexico. Englewood Beach is located on Manasota Key, a small barrier island. The southern half of the key is in Charlotte County and the northern part is in Sarasota County.

Manasota Key differs between these two counties. Driving along the Beach Road, one notices that in Sarasota county there is virtually nothing but residential properties along N. Beach Road. Trees line the road and are encouraged to overhang and provide a canopy for the road. The Charlotte County part of the road is lined with houses, motels, condos, resorts, small stores and restaurants. Trees are cleared well back from the road. Both drives are very pretty but evoke different emotions.

There are four very good public beach access areas on Manasota Key. At the north end of Manasota Key is Blind Pass Beach Park. South from there, but still in Charlotte County, is Manasota Beach. Englewood Beach at Chadwick Park, just off the bridge at the south access point, is the most popular and built up. Stump Pass Beach State Park is in a natural setting.

There are several local restaurants with good fare but for fine dining one might make the trip to Venice or Sarasota. Local artisans are in abundance and a variety of products may be purchased. Of course, fishing and boating, cruises and charters can be found everywhere. Night life is limited.

Visitors to Englewood Beach are in a location to tour from Tampa to the southwest Florida cities. Driving north to Tampa and St. Petersburg is about ninety minutes. Driving south for at least the same amount of time would get one to Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel and Captiva Islands, Cape Coral, Fort Myers and Pine island including Matlacha, Bokeelia and St. James City. For the boater, these areas are closer by water than roadway. In addition the bridgeless islands of North Captiva, Useppa, Don Pedro, Palm Island and Little Gasparilla are all just north of Sanibel-Captiva and can only be reached by boat.

For fliers, the Sarasota International Airport in north Sarasota or The Southwest Florida International Airport southwest of Fort Myers services this area.
